Unfortunately, below-freezing temperatures do not kill COVID-19.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">While at war with dust mites and other suspected allergens, we were also battling chronic infectious diseases in our household that required calls with the CDC and many visits with a pediatric infectious disease doctor. We learned a lot of gross and frightening facts like how long bacteria and viruses can live on paper and in the air. We also learned that our household was relatively \u201csafe\u201d, but that to keep it that way, we needed to take extra precautions when we came home from the outside world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Here are 6 practical, easy precautions you can add to what you already do to help protect your family from COVID-19:<\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><strong>1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Take off your shoes before entering the house<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">We are all being so careful with what we touch with our hands. It makes sense that the bottom of your shoes can bring in some nasty things that you don\u2019t want to introduce to your home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><strong>2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Wash your hands immediately after entering the house.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul data-rte-list=\"default\">\n<li>\n<p class=\"\">Use a disposable paper towel to dry.\u00a0\u00a0If you are low on paper towels, wash your hand towels (at least daily) in hot water and dry them until they are crispy.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\">You can watch the many informing videos on how to wash your hands properly, but key things I learned from the infectious disease doctor are:<\/p>\n<ul data-rte-list=\"default\">\n<li>\n<p class=\"\">Soap and water are just fine<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\">Water does not have to be scalding hot<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\">The space between your thumb and index fingers are often missed when washing your hands<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\">You have to wash past your wrists to be thorough<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\">Consider not wearing rings or watches. Or remove them immediately when you get home and wash your hands and wrists.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"\">\u00a0<strong>3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Change to clean clothes that you only wear in your house<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul data-rte-list=\"default\">\n<li>\n<p class=\"\">You can change directly into comfy sweats or for some of us, pajamas.\u00a0\u00a0No judgment.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\">Wash the clothes you wore out to the grocery store<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"\">\u00a0<strong>4.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Shower at night<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul data-rte-list=\"default\">\n<li>\n<p class=\"\">In Asian households, this is the norm. My parents still don\u2019t understand why people would get into their beds dirty.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\">Bonus: this step helps if you suffer from allergies.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"\">\u00a0<strong>5.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0If you have eyeglasses, wear them while at the store<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">This is a physical reminder NOT to touch your eyes.\u00a0\u00a0It may provide a bit of protection, but not a whole lot.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><strong>6.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Sanitize high use items daily.\u00a0\u00a0Here are some items that you may not have considered:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul data-rte-list=\"default\">\n<li>\n<p class=\"\">Your keys and key fobs<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\">Your car door handles<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\">Your eyeglasses or sunglasses<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\">Your backpacks, purses, wallets<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\">Your credit cards<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"\">Let me know if you\u2019d like to go to crazy town. I\u2019d be happy to share more extreme measures that we used to implement at home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u00a0<em>COVID-19 has been declared a global pandemic.
